1. INFORMATION ABOUT THE OPEN LECTURE AND THE SEMINAR
GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND AIMS
This workshop will be a practical, moving and hopeful exploration of ways of working with the often intense and frequently difficult mental health challenges, such as despair and suicidal experience. Many times (although not all the times) these and other similar experiences are made inside psychiatric contexts.
We will use and share principles and practices drawn mostly from narrative therapy.
Despair and suicidal experience can be very difficult problems to respond to as workers of mental health. They can often spark worry to workers and the worry can frequently lead to panic for workers. When this happens, the worker can be taken away from their preferred way of working and then the people dealing with despair and suicidal experience can feel isolated in their experience.
In this course there will be an emphasis on life saving ideas, skills and practices that workers can take away and immediately use in their work, so that worry and panic does not overwhelm them and subsequently the clients do not experience isolation and consequently walk hopeful paths.
METHOD AND SPECIFIC CONTENT
The workshop will combine small lectures, the sharing of hopeful work, discussion and the opportunity to practice some of the ideas. This workshop is designed to go beyond risk assessments and find ways to build life-saving stories with those struggling with despair, suicidal experience or psychiatric experience.
The course will cover:
- Principles drawn from narrative therapy relevant for working with the problem of suicidal experience, despair, intense mental health challenges and dealing with the psychiatric experience.
- Ways to help people make sense of mental health distress rather than locate what is wrong within them and get into hopeful paths.
- Ways to use the narrative practices of externalizing and reauthoring when working with suicidal experience, despair and/ or psychiatric experience.
- The ‘discourses’ or common cultural understandings of suicide and suicidal experience
- The shaping aspect of power in language use, when speaking about suicidal experience and how we can cultivate a potentially bigger variety of descriptions of suicidal experience
- How we can sensitively link people and assist people to make contributions to others with similar experiences by using the written word
- Reviewing actual work with people who have intense mental health challenges, suicidal experience or psychiatric experience via video of counselling, transcripts of counselling, collective or living documents and letters
- Ways of working with people in mental health settings / psychiatric hospitals
